Build Journals

A build journal is the story of how a piece was made, told as a timeline of dated entries with photos. Attach one to a listing and buyers see how the blade came to be, right on the product page. It is free for every smith. You start one from a piece under Dashboard → Products.

Start a journal on a piece

Open one of your products and choose Start a build journal. Give it a title and a short intro if you like, for example the steel, the length, and how long it took.

Add your entries

Add an entry for each step of the build. Every entry can carry a stage tag, a line or two about the work, and photos.

  • Pick a stage such as Forging, Grinding, Heat treat, Handle, or Finish, or type your own.
  • Set the date the work happened, so the timeline reads in order.
  • Add as many photos to an entry as you like, and reorder, edit, or delete entries any time.

Publish it

Your journal stays a private draft while you build. When you are ready, choose Publish and it appears as The Story Behind This Piece on the public product page. A published journal is also rich, unique content that helps buyers and search engines find your work.

Journals on a commission

For a custom order, start a journal on the commission instead of a product. The journal goes privately to that customer: they follow the build in their own account, and get an email each time you post a new entry. There is nothing for them to install, and no need to publish, the customer always sees their own journal.

A piece and its papers

A build journal pairs naturally with a Certificate of Authenticity. One tells the story of how the blade was made, the other proves who made it and tracks who has owned it since.
