About Mud Dog Forge

Mud Dog Forge is a hobby knife shop ran by an American Bladesmith Society Apprentice.

Mud Dog Forge is open to commissions and custom collaborations in addition to our regular experiments. We focus on hand forged blades with some stock removal. Each knife comes with a hand sewn leather sheath or Kydex/leather combination. We do purchase handle material from a number of suppliers but also enjoy stabilizing burled maple in house.

Follow our journey on Instagram, check out our website or shoot us an email. We appreciate any and all constructive criticism.

More about Us: The Man: I have always enjoyed making things. As a child I, like many, was enamored with the idea of building anything with Legos. I built houses, forts, castles, spaceships; anything I could imagine. As I got older, my need to build and create things was fed by Cub Scout and then Boy Scouts. Wood and rope became my material, carving and building structures out of wood became my art.

The Myth: Wood, rope, stone, pottery, leather, none of these seemed to truly satisfy me. It wasn’t until quite a bit later that I discovered that I could work with metal. I started off with a large peach can, lined with plaster, as my first forge to heat treat a knife I then ground on a 1x30 Harbor Freight grinder. Maybe, just maybe, I had finally found the prefect medium for me. One knife turned into two. Two knives turned into a greater desire to learn, and I took the opportunity to spend two weeks in the Intro to Bladesmithing course, learning under a Master Bladesmith of the American Bladesmith Society. Now I can’t seem to spend enough time in the forge making the next knife.

The legend: Mud Dog is a name that my father came up with for me a long time ago. It was the name that I used as a child when doing business with neighbors, and it has always stuck with me. It was further cemented into my life when my family got a dog that seemed to confirm the name of the business: an incredibly muddy dog.

In 2022 I figured it was finally time to start trying to bring my new skills and desire to create to the next level, and Mud Dog Forge was established. I now do my best to create heirloom quality knives for people of every walk of life… especially the muddy life.
